YouRockRed client Lido Pimienta wins Polaris Music Prize 2017!

A major career highlight happened for me last night for YouRockRed when Lido Pimienta won Polaris Music Prize and shout me out on CBC TV saying that it was working with me on a marketing plan really kicked her into gear towards building her team that led her to this. (who were also thanked, )

From the moment I heard La Papessa I was like, this is gonna win Polaris… AND IT DID!!!!! This morning I woke up and was like, HOLY SHIT, she accomplished everything we planned for December and January essentially overnight now. Such an incredibly deserving artist.

Congrats to Lido and her team!!!

10 CMW Picks by YouRockRed

Canadian Music Week starts tomorrow and I’ve put together my top 10 picks for what to attend from showcases, award shows and parties over the next week.

And no, you won’t sleep but you’ll meet new friends, have some laughs and discover amazing new bands from all over the world!

1. Bleeker at Mod Club – Tues April 18

Lucky enough to work with these gents and their amazing team. Go see ‘em before their big USA tour!

2. Zoobombs @Silver Dollar – Tues April 18

Silver Dollar is closing and that’s super sad, but this Japanese punk band calls it their second home. I made the mistake of seeing them the first time without earplugs. Pack them. They are LOUD.

3. Conferences! April 19-21 @Sheraton Centre

Go learn and be learned. Also, tons of networking to be done. I wrote the feature article for Canadian Musician Magazine if you need any further tips. Particularly, go see Rick Barker talk at 6 on Wednesday. He’s super inspiring.

4. Live Music Industry Awards – Wednes April 19

I’m really excited to attend this as Rush are receiving an award and any excuse to dress up on the red carpet with musicians is OK with me

5. The Indies Wednes April 18 @ The Phoenix

54/40, Dan Mangan.. So many artists are on this bill. Definitely going to be one of the hottest tickets of the week.

6. Canadian Women Musically  - Thurs April 20 @ TBD

This is a non-CMW showcase being put on by some kick-ass ladies from 4-7pm. Message HERE for more info

7. Les DeuxLuxes Thurs April 20 @Supermarket

I discovered this band through as a juror for an award and fell hard for them. They’re playing the Bon Sound showcase and I think I’ll be sticking here for more of Thursday night.

8. Hollerado at Exclaim/Fred Perry Party – Fri April 20

Wait, it’s not confirmed but my detective work (check out the number of “???????” above!) has revealed they’ve got a new album out to promote. Plus, past clients PONY! are playing too.

9. Dandy Warhols Fri April 20 @Lee’s Palace

I think I like this band more after watching the documentary DIGG too many times (and showing my students too). Excited to see them play live.

10. No Bro Fri April 20 @ The Garrison

I’ve got a thing for Dine Alone and Buzz bands and both my Friday choices won’t disappoint. These gals are doing Wayhome too!

… now go get ready to rock!

Speaking at Kismet Thoughts – SAT APR 8 – FREE!

This Saturday, April 8 at 215 Spadina Street in Toronto I’ll be leading a FREE talk on Grant Writing & Planning for Kismet Thoughts from 12 p.m.- 2 p.m.

It’s not a panel so I’m solo on this thing but am going to be presenting a version of what I teach my students at Trebas in a condensed, casual style.

FB RSVP linked HERE

With grant season just around the corner, don’t let this happen to you!

YouRockRed at Juno Awards 2017!

I’m headed to the Juno Awards and JunoFest from tomorrow, Thursday, March 30 to April 2nd covering as Canadian Musician Magazine (social updates) and YouRockRed.

I’ll be rooting for YouRockRed clients Bleeker for 2017 Breakthrough Group of the Year. Clearly!

You’ll most likely spot my red hair bobbing along in the background of the red carpets and photo pits throughout the March 30-April 2nd, so please come say hi. I’m from Ottawa originally, so it’ll be really cool to hit up music venues like Zaphods and Mavericks that I used to go to every week or more.

Sidebar, if I get to meet Canadian music icons Bryan Adams and/or Sarah McLaughlin, be warned the floodgates of music-geekery shall be thrown open.

See you at the Junos!!!

CMM! Cover Story: How to Do Music Conferences

Thrilled to announce the cover feature article I worked on the topic of music education and how to make the most of music conferences is now available on newstands across Canada!  It’s about 10 pages long, so lots to be learned.

I interviewed festival managers, bookers, producers, publicists, artist managers and more to get a full representation of all the best advice for indie/DIY musicians. There’s also an article on how you can make a music conference happen in your own town.

Pick it up now or read it online HERE.

(P.S. I’ve got the May/June feature as well- stay tuned!)

Best Albums of 2015

When it comes to best albums of the year I try to include the albums I honestly listened to unabashedly on repeat throughout the year. Sleater-Kinney and Courtney Barnett topped it. I also only got into Of Monsters and Men after catching them at Osheaga this summer and then being lucky enough to attend an invite-only acoustic duo at CityFolk with about another dozen people there… and it was amazing. (See photo below!)

Best Albums of 2015

  1. Sleater-Kinney- No Cities to Love
  2. Courtney Barnett- Sometimes I Sit And Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit
  3. Of Monsters and Men- Beneath the Skin
  4. Alabama Shakes- Sound and Colour
  5. Eagles of Death Metal – Zipper Down (Point here: I genuinely was toting this album as a best of in September before the tragedy)
  6. Father John Misty- I Love You Honeybear
  7. FOALS- What Went Down
  8. Leon Bridges- Coming Home
  9. Yacht- I Thought the Future Would be Cooler
  10. The Wooden Sky- Let’s Be Ready
Of Monsters and Men- CityFolk

Of Monsters and Men- CityFolk

Best Shows of 2015

Let’s make it a baker’s dozen here because this year I saw so many good shows from international acts and major festivals to invite-only showcases. Numbers indicate how many times seen in 2015.

Japanese psych-rock band Bo Ningen set a new standard for all rock acts I ever see in the future. Do yourself a favour, seriously, and just click here to witness the show I caught. I was lucky enough to be standing in front of the red guitar player the whole time. My partner and I are already planning our return to Reykjavik for Iceland Airwaves again.

  1. Bo Ninjen- KEXP KEX Hostel – Iceland Airwaves, Iceland (x2)
  2. Fleetwood Mac- Air Canada Centre- Toronto
  3. Of Monsters and Men- private show, CityFolk, Ottawa (x2)
  4. Wand, Heaters- Silver Dollar, Toronto (x2)
  5. Father John Misty- Field Trip Festival, Toronto (x3)
  6. Sharon and Bram – Field Trip Festival, Toronto
  7. Metz, Lee’s Palace, Toronto
  8. Refused, Ricoh Coliseum, Toronto
  9. Arkells, Ottawa Bluesfest, Ottawa (x3)
  10. Stars, Panamania, Toronto (x4)
  11. Jacco Gardiner, Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto
  12. The Pixies, Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto
